Christina McCann became the fourth teacher in Texas to be locked up for illegal sexual activity with a student. McCann is 39-years-old and has resigned as a marketing teacher at Lake Travis High School in Austin.
Allegedly, McCann had sex with an 18-year-old student in a hotel room while she was chaperoning a trip for students to a conference in Ft. Worth for future business leaders. In addition, McCann was allegedly drinking with some of the students she was chaperoning on the trip.
Although the incident allegedly occurred in February, police began investigating the incident in May and McCann turned herself into the Ft. Worth police this week.
We have seen an interesting development of female teacher sexually abusing their students in recent years. While this may have occurred occasionally in the past, most experts believe an increasing number of female teacher are having sex with their students.
In the articles I’ve read, the experts attribute this increase to the blurring of boundaries and the depictions of sexuality in social media and on television. Basically, the experts are saying that we believe that what we see in the media is acceptable.
As parents, I want to encourage you to start talking about sexuality with your children at a young age. We cannot trust the boundaries that used to exist in society that protected our children.
Our children need enough knowledge to be able to tell us when the adults around them are trying to engage in inappropriate sexual behaviors.
